Radio i telewizja ERT funkcjonowały od 1938 roku. Opłacane były z publicznego podatku. Decyzja rządu wywołała falę gwałtownych protestów w Grecji, ale także w wielu krajach Europy. Bardzo ostro zareagowały Międzynarodowa Federacja Dziennikarzy oraz Europejska Federacja Dziennikarzy, które potępiły działania władz nazywając je „absurdem” i „ciosem w demokrację”. Wiele europejskich stowarzyszeń dziennikarskich wydało oświadczenia solidaryzując się z greckimi kolegami.

The Polish Journalists Association fully supports your protest against the latest government’s decision on the public broadcaster’s closure.
We strongly condemn all the activities which lead to the reduction of the press freedom. The closure of the public televisions, radios and Internet portals is nothing else that a violent assassination attempt on democracy and free media.
We join you in your anger and struggle for press freedom.
